Palm gets with the program, releases WebOS SDK to hungry developers

At last count, the App Catalog for the new Palm Pre only had about 30 programs listed, a mere pittance compared to Apple's gigantic App Store. But Palm is looking to close the gap after releasing—finally—the long-awaited developer kit for its brand-new WebOS platform.Palm announced on its official blog Thursday the immediate public release of its "Mojo" SDK, the toolkit that'll allow developers to start cranking out apps for the WebOS-powered Palm Pre.The Mojo SDK had already been available to a small circle of developers through an "early release" program (hence, the 30-odd apps now available in the Palm App Catalog), but everyone else—until now, anyway—was stuck in a holding pattern, or forced to cobble together apps without the official SDK.Just a few weeks ago, Palm told developers that the Mojo SDK wouldn't be available until the "end of summer"—an announcement that provoked groans from developers who'd been chomping at the bit to build their own Pre apps. Guess someone at Palm decided to put the pedal to the metal and get the SDK out a little earlier. That's good news for owners of the new Palm Pre, who've been stuck with a mere handful of apps since the Pre's launch in early June. Meanwhile, Apple's been gleefully touting the 65,000-plus programs in its giant App Store, which recently crossed the 1.5-billion download mark.Of course, it'll still be awhile before Pre owners see a flood of new apps in the App Catalog. While developers are free to start coding away with the just-released SDK, Palm won't be accepting any public app submissions until the fall—still a couple of months away.
